Kids grow out of their clothes so fast. That as soon as you have been and bought a new dress, then they grow out of it. It is heartbreaking that they wear an outfit only a handful of times, especially when clothes cost so much. But there are ways to dress your kids without breaking the bank. This means that you can be frugal with kids’ clothes, and save some money.

clothes on hangers

People usually sort their own clothes as well as their kid’s clothes a couple of times a year. Towards the end of summer and towards the end of winter. They have a good clear-out ready for the new season. So you can get some awesome stuff second-hand. They are usually in really good condition, and they are just outgrown or not cool enough for the kids to wear. You just need to know where to look to be frugal with kid’s clothes.

Being frugal with kids’ clothes is also great for the environment too because it keeps clothes out of the landfill.

Look On MarketPlace

MarketPlace is going to be your number one place to look for everything when you have a child. You can often find bundles of clothes for a few pounds to good quality label outfits for £4 or £5.

To be able to use Marketplace, you need to have a Facebook account. You can often bargain with people on Marketplace too, but please remember that the people are selling the clothes because they need the money too.

Sometimes on Facebook, you can find groups where people give stuff away for free. If you are lucky, you could end up with a whole new wardrobe without paying out cash.

Upcycle And Recycle Old Clothes

When we were growing up, we used to have hand-me-downs. Nowadays we call it recycling clothes. If it is still wearable, pass it on to someone else that can use it. If your kids are close in age, then this is really easy to do. But as they get older, they won’t want to wear their older sibling’s clothes.

Another way to recycle old clothes is to take your old worn-out clothes and make something new. We all have clothes that we have outgrown, that we don’t wear or maybe need a repair. So if you find a pattern for a kid’s outfit that you like, you can make it out of your old clothes.

If your child has grown out of a dress, you can usually make something else out of it. Use the skirt part to make a bodice on a new dress.

Make Clothes From Old Bedding Sets

This way of being frugal with kid’s clothes is to make clothes from old duvet covers and sheets. This really is for the little ones, more than the older ones. You can buy old bedding sets for £1 or £2 in charity shops, or you can use old bedding sets that you have at home. The best ones to look for are old character bedding sets. It doesn’t matter if they look old-fashioned because retro-looking is good.

Wash and dry the sheet, then iron it. Lay it out on the floor and cut around the pattern. You will need to make sure that the characters are all facing the right way. You won’t want upside-down ones on your clothes. This is great for kids that want character clothes, but cannot afford them.

Be Frugal With Kid’s Clothes At Car Boot Sales

If you have a car, then get yourself to a car boot sale this summer. You can pick up clothes from 10p up to a few quid. But you are sure to grab a bargain there because people always take their old clothes there to sell. You could also sell your old kids’ clothes at a car boot sale to make some extra cash.

Charity Shop Shopping

If you are shopping in charity shops, you need to use shops where the clothes are checked for ripped and damaged. Some charity shops will put anything out for sale, even if they only get 50p for it. Whilst others inspect the clothes for damage. Jeans are a great buy from charity shops because they are never outdated and you can wear them with anything.

The clothes in a charity shop are usually separated into sizes, so it is easy to look for something in your size. But others also separate their clothes into colours too. This is perfect if you are looking for something of a particular colour. When you buy from a charity shop, you know the money is going to a charity (after they pay their overpaid managers).

There is a misconception that charity shops are full of clothes from people that have passed away. That is not true at all. Especially kid’s clothes, that are there because the child has grown out of them. You can find some great little outfits for your kids in charity shops.

Other Ways To Be Frugal With Kid’s Clothes

Of course, there are so many other ways that you can be frugal with kid’s clothes. You can go shopping in the sales and get clothes at 50% off. Sometimes supermarkets sell their really old clothes for £1 or even cheaper. But you need to be in the right place at the right time.

You can look for local swap shops, where you can take your kid’s old outgrown clothes and swap them for clothes that now fit your child. This is a great way to save money.
